With the Union Public Service Commission announcing the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam Result 2025, successful candidates are now a step closer to joining India’s prestigious civil services.

As per the official notification, the candidature of those who have cleared the prelims is provisional.

The next stage is the UPSC CSE Mains 2025, which comprises a written examination followed by a personality test (interview).

The Candidates will have to update the following details to appear for the UPSC Civil Services Mains Exam 2025:

  1. Payment of the ₹200 fee for admission to the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2025 is required. However, female candidates and those belonging to PwBD, SC, and ST categories are exempted from this fee.
  2. Candidates must also submit or update details related to scribe assistance, use of assistive devices, or request for question papers in large print format (for the Mains exam).
  3. Additionally, candidates who have changed their name after matriculation or whose name differs from what appears on their matriculation or higher education certificates must submit a Gazette Notification to support the name change provided in their CSE-2025 application.

Candidates can submit the details mentioned above from June 16 to June 25, 2025.

About UPSC CSE Mains Written Exam 2025

According to the UPSC, the Civil Services (Main) Examination 2025, scheduled to begin on August 22, is designed to evaluate a candidate’s overall intellectual capabilities and depth of understanding, rather than just their memory or range of information.

The written exam will comprise nine conventional papers, including two qualifying papers.

The commission noted, “The General Studies papers (Paper II to Paper V) will feature questions that a well-educated individual can answer without specialized preparation. These questions aim to assess a candidate’s general awareness across a range of topics relevant to a career in Civil Services. They are intended to test the candidate’s basic understanding of key issues, analytical skills, and ability to form balanced views on conflicting socio-economic goals, objectives, and demands. Candidates are expected to provide answers that are relevant, clear, and concise.”

Here’s how UPSC defines the personality test

The commission mentioned that during the personality test, candidates will be interviewed by a Board that will have access to their career records and will ask questions on topics of general interest.

The main aim of the personality test is to evaluate a candidate’s personal suitability for a career in public service. Conducted by a panel of competent and impartial observers, the interview is designed to assess the candidate’s mental calibre, social qualities, and awareness of current affairs.

Qualities that will be judged include the following:

  1. Mental alertness
  2. Critical powers of assimilation
  3.  Clear and logical exposition
  4. Balance of judgement
  5. Variety and depth of interest,
  6. Ability for social cohesion and leadership,
  7. Intellectual and moral integrity.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced the Civil Services Preliminary Results 2025 on June 11, 2025, through its official website, upsc.gov.in.

As per the commission, the marks, cut-off scores, and answer keys for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2025 will be made available on the official website only after the final results are declared.
